You can improve SAP ECC finance processes while preparing for S/4HANA. Better inventory valuation, clearer profitability reporting, simpler user workflows, and stronger controls can provide useful results before a full ERP conversion.
Based on Paul Ovigele’s SAP Controlling Conference presentation, these ten options provide a starting point for your roadmap. Some use ECC capabilities; others require add-ons, cloud services, or a separate S/4HANA system. Assess release compatibility, licensing, and business value for each option.
1. Expand Your Use of Material Ledger
Review whether Material Ledger can improve inventory valuation and cost transparency in your ECC system. Depending on your design, this may include parallel currencies, valuation views, and optional Actual Costing.
Treat Actual Costing as a process change: confirm material settings, ownership of price differences, reconciliation, and the closing sequence. Actual activity-price calculation and order revaluation require their own settings and processing; activating Material Ledger alone does not perform every step. See Actual Costing setup and period-end closing.
2. Evaluate Valuated Stock in Transit
Valuated stock in transit can improve visibility of goods moving between locations or companies. The ECC business function LOG_MM_SIT supports relevant scenarios, subject to the enhancement package, business-function prerequisites, and process design.
Start with one stock-transfer flow. Agree when ownership and valuation change, then test goods issue, goods receipt, reversals, and reconciliation. Confirm support for the particular intracompany, intercompany, or customer-delivery scenario rather than assuming all goods in transit follow the same posting logic.
3. Improve Cost Component Detail in COGS Reporting
If your team needs material, labor, and overhead detail in cost of goods sold, assess reporting approaches or an ECC-compatible add-on. Define whether the requirement concerns standard costs, Actual Costing revaluations, or both.
The native S/4HANA COGS split is not a setting you can simply switch on in every ECC system. Check the proposed solution’s release support, posting design, reversals, and reconciliation. Our SAP COGS Split in S/4HANA guide explains the target capability; an ECC implementation needs its own design.
4. Assess Account-Based CO-PA Alongside Costing-Based CO-PA
Where appropriate, evaluate account-based CO-PA alongside your existing costing-based profitability analysis. Use the assessment to improve account assignments, profitability characteristics, and reconciliation practices.
This can build experience relevant to a later Margin Analysis design. It does not create the Universal Journal in ECC or automatically produce complete S/4HANA historical reporting. Plan conversion, historical-data requirements, and reporting differences separately.
5. Use ECC as a Source for Group Reporting
You can consider SAP S/4HANA Finance for group reporting while ECC remains an operational source system. The consolidation solution runs in a separate S/4HANA environment; it is not installed as a native ECC consolidation feature.
Define how ECC data will be mapped, transferred, validated, and reconciled. SAP Group Reporting Data Collection and supported upload or integration approaches can help collect data from source systems. Confirm the target release, connectivity, licensing, and consolidation requirements before selecting an architecture.
6. Introduce Compatible SAP Fiori Apps
Select SAP Fiori apps that support your ECC release and business processes. Focus on a task with a clear user benefit, such as an approval or an occasional-user workflow.
Check each app’s back-end components, front-end requirements, Gateway services, database prerequisites, and authorizations. Some apps require HANA or S/4HANA capabilities; a launchpad tile alone does not make those capabilities available in ECC.
7. Assess ECC on the SAP HANA Database
Moving a supported ECC landscape to SAP HANA may improve suitable reporting and processing workloads. It remains a database migration, with sizing, compatibility, testing, and operational work to plan.
Measure your current bottlenecks before deciding. Benchmark representative close jobs and queries in the proposed environment. ECC on HANA remains ECC: it does not introduce the Universal Journal or all S/4HANA application functions, and performance gains vary by workload.
8. Extend ECC Through SAP BTP
Use SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) to assess integration and extensions outside the ECC core. SAP Cloud Connector can support secure connectivity between BTP applications and an on-premise ERP back end.
Choose one supported use case and confirm interfaces, authorization, monitoring, error handling, and service entitlements. A cloud extension can reduce the need for core customization, but it still requires integration and lifecycle management.
9. Build Governed Analytics on ECC Data
SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) and existing business intelligence tools can help your team analyze ECC data alongside other sources. SAP Analytics Cloud supports an import connection to SAP ERP, with configuration requirements for connectivity and data acquisition.
Begin with trusted measures: inventory values, cost differences, or close status. Define ownership, extraction frequency, reconciliation, and access controls. Evaluate predictive features against the selected connection and model; they are not automatically available for every ECC dataset.
10. Strengthen Security and Compliance Processes
Review roles, segregation of duties, user provisioning, privileged access, and patch management as part of ongoing ECC operations. Coordinate authentication improvements with the identity and access architecture used by your landscape.
Assign owners and measurable follow-up actions. These improvements support current operations and migration preparation, but they do not replace a supported maintenance and S/4HANA transition plan.
Build a 90-Day Assessment and Pilot Plan
Use Table 1 to organize your initial assessment and pilot plan. This is a planning example; major platform changes may need a separate implementation schedule.
| Period | Focus | Expected Output |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–30 | Assess pain points, release prerequisites, data quality, and existing entitlements. | A ranked list of opportunities with owners and measurable baseline results. |
| Days 31–60 | Test one bounded finance or analytics improvement in a nonproduction system. | A documented pilot with reconciled results, user feedback, and support requirements. |
| Days 61–90 | Review value, implementation effort, operating cost, and future migration fit. | A rollout decision and an agreed roadmap for larger projects. |

Make the Business Case
A business case helps you decide whether a proposed ECC improvement justifies its cost and effort.
- Define the result: Select a measurable goal, such as fewer manual adjustments, clearer cost explanations, or less reconciliation effort.
- Compare the full effort: Include implementation, integration, licenses, testing, and ongoing support.
- Check migration fit: Identify what can be retained, redesigned, or retired when moving to S/4HANA.

Glossary
Business Case
A documented justification for a proposed project or improvement that compares expected benefits with costs, risks, resource requirements, and alternatives. It supports a decision on whether and how to proceed.
CO-PA
Profitability Analysis. ECC supports costing-based and account-based approaches; their reporting and reconciliation designs differ.
COGS Split
Analysis or posting of cost of goods sold by cost component. Availability and implementation depend on the SAP release and selected solution.
ECC
SAP ERP Central Component, the ERP application landscape discussed in this article.
Group Reporting
SAP S/4HANA Finance for group reporting is SAP’s solution for financial consolidation and group financial reporting. It combines financial data from consolidation units to prepare consolidated financial statements and supports group closing processes. ECC can provide source data through a supported collection or integration approach.
Group Reporting Data Collection (GRDC)
Apps for collecting and mapping information into SAP S/4HANA Finance for group reporting.
Material Ledger
SAP’s inventory valuation component for configured currencies and valuation views, with optional Actual Costing functionality.
Pilot Plan
A time-limited plan for testing a proposed improvement on a small scale before a wider rollout. It defines the scope, objectives, owners, timeline, success measures, and criteria for deciding whether to proceed.
SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)
SAP’s cloud solution for business intelligence, enterprise planning, and predictive analytics. It helps teams visualize data, analyze performance, and develop plans and forecasts. In an ECC landscape, its use requires supported data connections and an appropriate reporting model.
